Why do dogs like to give kisses?
Dog kissing is instinctive. Dog licking is a form of communication and stimulation for dogs.
What we call "dog kisses" are an instinctive impulse that begins at birth.

Why does the dog lick: Dog kissing
From birth, this is how the mother communicates with her new puppies, how she stimulates them to start breathing and how she cleans them when they are born, so it is very important for the survival of the puppies.
In wild and domestic dogs, you will find that they will lick around the mother's mouth, as newborns and puppies still retain that instinct.
It is also a kind of gesture of submission: the more subordinate members of a herd will lick the more dominant members and that is important to maintain herd harmony."

The kiss of affection to show affection
As you might imagine, dog kisses are also forms of affection.
That is, it is affectionate when combined with tail wags and other signs of happiness.
For example, when you come home from a long day at work, your dog wants to say "Hi mom (or dad)! ¡I am so excited that you are home!".
So, doggie kisses are a natural sign of affection.
"Licking for affection causes your dog to release endorphins that calm him, comfort him and make him feel safe. You are the most important person in his life and he wants you to know that."
While affection is nice, there are other reasons why your dog may lick you.
Your dog likes your taste
It seems gross to us, but our sweaty, salty skin can be intriguing to dogs, who tend to explore the world with their mouths and are comforted by the scent of their loving owners.
It's the same reason our socks and underwear are often stolen.
In other words, your dog loves you and is comforted by your smell and taste.
Unlike people, they are not put off by the sometimes strong sweat and odors; rather, they are intrigued.
Licking can be comforting for your dog
Dog kissing can reduce your stress and theirs.
Generally, if a dog licks you it is a sign of affection. However, if the dog licks someone who is agitated or excited this could be a symptom of stress. By licking that person, they are trying to relieve their stress because they know it is a welcome gesture.
If the dog licks you out of nervousness and not out of love, you will be able to recognize this behavior thanks to other reassuring signs. Signs such as raised ears, tilted head and anxious movements."
Then, if you are visibly upset, your dog may try to lick you to calm you down.
Or, if your dog is feeling stressed, then licking you can help them calm down by releasing those endorphins and sending a cascade of positive feelings through their bodies.

Is dog kissing safe: Is it safe for dogs to lick you?
It is usually relatively harmless to let your dog lick you.
However, don't believe the old myth that dogs' mouths are cleaner than humans' mouths.
Dogs' mouths contain a large amount of naturally occurring bacteria, which is part of the reason why dog bites are so dangerous. However, this bacteria probably won't cause harm unless it enters an open wound.
But hey, you might think it's gross. And that's okay.
How to get your dog to stop licking you
You might think dog kissing is disgusting. Or, you may feel that enough is enough. Getting your dog to stop licking you (and others) is often easier than you might think.
It's just a matter of denying him attention when he does.
Stop touching or looking at your dog. Turn your head away. Get up and walk away if necessary.
As soon as he stops trying to lick you, reward him with attention, affection or even treats.
Over time, your dog will generally understand that licking is an unwanted behavior.
If you want your dog to give you an occasional kiss, you can train him by adding a word or phrase such as "kiss" to the behavior.
Reward the gentle kiss, say on the cheek or chin (or maybe just on the hand, depending on your preference).
Then withhold attention if he starts to lick you uncontrollably. If you need help with this and other training, consider hiring a dog trainer. But here are some tips for lowering anxiety in poodles: Separation anxiety in poodle dogs.
6 things you didn't know about dog kissing
#1: Dog kisses date back to 10,000 years ago
The "kissing" behavior probably began only among dogs. Puppies lick their mothers as a precursor to feeding. As such, the behavior continues into adulthood with whomever or whatever is the dog's primary caregiver.
Humans started taking on the role of caretaker about ten millennia ago, and it's been both cute and gross ever since.
#2: Dog kisses indicate social status
Dogs kiss other dogs to indicate that they, the kissers, are "lower" on the social scale than the recipients of the kiss.
These social cues are important for dogs in a pack environment to help establish a strong social structure with minimal conflict. In canine-human relationships these behaviors are reflected.
#3: Dog kissing can make you sick, but it is rare.
The fact is that dogs and humans have comparable amounts of bacteria in their mouths, and the chances of getting sick from your dog's kisses are low.
Even so, there is the possibility of mouth-to-mouth transmission of diseases between pets and their human parents (such as staphylococcal infections, parasites, etc.).
That said, the best thing to do is to keep him from licking your mouth, and assuming you encourage and help encourage a certain baseline of cleanliness for your dog, and worm him regularly, the danger of getting sick from dog kissing, from your dog, is minimal.
#4: Dog kissing may be a sensory behavior.
Sometimes, the only reason your dog kisses you is because of a particularly (and pleasant) smell on your person.
Maybe your skin is a little salty, or they like the smell of a certain lotion you've applied. This also suggests the obvious: if you've just eaten something that's especially tasty and your dog smells it, there's a good chance they're suddenly in the mood to plant a nice wet food on you.
#5: Dogs kiss some people more than others
Dog kissing is also a learned behavior that can be trained.
If you are a puppy parent, who encouraged or praised your furry friend when he or she kissed you, he or she will carry that behavior into adulthood.
Likewise, if you are the only one in your household who encouraged that behavior, your dog is likely to kiss you more often than others.
#6: There's a right time and a wrong time for dog kissing
No matter how much you would like your dog to give you kisses, don't force the behavior.
Dogs constantly send non-verbal signals to their humans about when they are comfortable and when they are not.
Kissing is one of these signals, so if your dog wants to kiss you, that's fine. However, if you initiate it, be careful not to smother him too much, which could make him nervous and cause him to rebel.
