The harlequin poodle

The first thing to know about this type of poodle is that we are referring to its color, not its size, so there are harlequin poodles of all 4 possible sizes.

There are harlequin toy poodles as well as giant harlequin poodles, and all sizes in between.

Although they are not accepted within the breed standard by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI), they have now begun to be accepted in some clubs.

They are of great beauty and look very exotic since it is rare to find bicolor poodles in a litter of puppies.

Characteristics of the Harlequin Poodle

The main thing to know if it is a harlequin poodle or just a bicolor poodle is to verify what percentage of white color dominates its coat.

In harlequin-colored poodles, we must observe that at least fifty percent of their total coat must be whiteand have spots (or patches) of any other acceptable solid color.

So we can say that the harlequin poodle is a white poodle with black, brown or red spots or patches.

Recall that the basic or solid poodle colors can be:

  • Cbasic odors: as the blackwhite and the brown or chocolate.
  • Diluted ColorsThe following are considered to be diluted red, apricot and gray.

The head of a harlequin poodle can be of a solid color.

The harlequin poodle with a white muzzle, either completely or partially, is the most valued.

Full or partial saddles are acceptable, provided they do not exceed the color ratio.

All-white coats are acceptable but not preferred.

This color is permitted in Argentina by the Kennel Club Argentino, for example, and in the United States it is a highly accepted and increasingly popular color.

We live in a freer, more open and inclusive society that welcomes these innovative Poodles or French Poodles leaving behind closed, classist and conservative concepts.

The only thing we should have as a goal is that the Poodle or French Poodle and its offspring should be healthy physically and emotionally.

Harlequin poodles, also called bicolor or parti-color.

In English we can find them under the name Parti Poodle

The Fédération Cynologique Internationale does not recognize these puppies because the particolor gene that they must carry to form a harlequin brought genetic defects of deafness and blindness, this is when crossing two harlequins.

But the truth is that even today, in the year 2021, it has not been possible to prove these sayings with certainty, and since no scientific proof has been provided, we only transmit, but without accepting it totally.

It is well known that this federation (it is not the only international federation), took many years to recognize the Poodle/poodle.Red French Poodle y gray.

In any case, we should be vigilant in this regard if we make a cross between two harlequins.

A matter of genes

The particolor gene is a recessive gene (present in inheritance but not visually manifested, but inherited) in the breed of Poodles or also called French Poodle.

In order for a harlequin poodle to be born in a litter, the parents must carry the gene, even if they are solid colored (white, black, brown).

Not just any solid will give harlequins, because if they do not carry the parti-color gene, they will never give harlequins.

History of the origin of the Harlequin poodle

You'd be surprised how little people know about the origin of harlequin poodles.

There is a common and peculiar mass misconception that poodle partis or harlequins were developed by some kind of breeding experiment.

And nothing could be further from the truth, and from history, the truth is that very little is known about the original colors of the poodle breed; they were originally multicolored; yes, and over time they were bred to remove the multicolor and obtain the solid colors known today.

Throughout the time period from about 1400 and into the late 1800s, a harlequin poodle was thought of whenever someone described, imagined or painted a poodle.

Unfortunately, in the early 1900's, even a little earlier, people began to like the standard poodle more and stopped breeding the harlequin poodle.

Almost extinct

This color of poodle would probably have become extinct if it were not for some breeders.

Today, both the AKC (the largest association of breeders or Kennels in the United States) and the UKC (since 2004, Harlequin poodles became eligible for the United Kennel Club), which is the second largest Kennel Club in the United States, allow the registration of all poodle colorsexcept Merle.

The poodles, we can find them, many colors, although it is more likely to get in Spain, with Pedigree only those of solid color.

There are many more beautiful colors and patterns.

Remember that if you want a harlequin poodle you must make sure its lineage with a serious breeder, because there are many cases of sales of harlequin poodles, which in reality, are mongrels of poodles with another parti-color breed.

Harlequin poodle price

The price of a clay poodle in the United States can cost around $ 600 to $ 2000 , and this does not take into account the deposit to reserve it, which breeders usually ask for, nor the cost of shipping, if necessary.

The cost of shipping generally exceeds $400 which includes one special conveyor for poodles approved by the airline and the required health certificate.

Trained harlequin poodles cost slightly more than untrained ones.

In Spain or Argentina, or in Mexico, the values vary greatly, and are much less frequent to find.

Other bicolor poodles

There are other types of two-colored poodles: the phantom or ghost poodles and the spotted poodles, also called Mismark or Branding error.

Spotted or splash poodles

These poodles or poodles, wrongly named Brand or abstract error can occur with any color of poodle.

This color means that there is not enough white to be called Harlequin Poodle or Parti, and they also present too much white to be called Solid.

Therefore, they considered it a 'trademark error' or 'abstract'.

These random white spotted poodles do not have a white base color.

White markings are often seen around the chest area, legs, tail tip, chin, nose or neck.

From my poodle.com we believe that this color was unjustly named!

With this name, it seems that there is something wrong with the poodle, when there is not, the brands wrong or mismatched, they are beautiful and we believe their unique color gives them character and individuality.

That's why we like to call them Splash poodles or spotted poodles ❤💕 a much fairer name for them, because they are beautiful and with just a touch of color!

Phanton Poodles

On the other hand, PHANTOM poodles or ghost poodles are the opposite of harlequins, those bicolor but where the black color dominates and have apricot, red or white spots.
